Bruno Just Wants to Party.

As much as I dig melancholy and deep lyrics, there are times I just want to listen to fun music – music that keeps my mind preoccupied from the other voices in my head I hear on the daily. Music that stays in my ears like infected earworms that leave me smiling. Congratulations Bruno Mars, you have been selected to uplift my spirits. And you do so magnificently.

The new album, 24K Magic, is a dance extravaganza of entertainment. It’s pretty clear that he was influenced by 80s and 90s music because the whole album is just a throwback to that era. I’m not complaining about it at all. I believe Bruno wants the world to just relax, have fun, dance, and not think about their problems. That’s kind of what he’s been all about anyway, but this third album really drives the idea home. From the title track, to “Chunky” to “Callin’ All My Lovelies” to my particular favorite, “Finesse” he keeps the party moving. My only complaint is that there are only 9 songs. He left me wanting more. My guess? Since the album is a tribute to old school 80s synths, and 90s drumbeats, maybe he also wanted to stay true to how albums were made back in the day 8 or 9 songs, and that was it. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s a short album, but it still packs a punch nonetheless.

What I love about Bruno is that he has tremendously big bravado in such a small stature. And he’s so darn likable. That smile, the way he carries himself, how he pines for the ladies it goes a long way to garner attention. One thing is for sure, he’s like the Tazmanian Devil. Once he leaves, you always know he was around because his voice and spirit stay with you for the rest of the day. He makes it his mission to make sure everyone has a good time because life is just too short not to and I appreciate that in a man. Even his love songs are pretty entertaining and I’m not a fan of love songs. He is a complete charmer and I’m thankful that in a world of music crap we have Bruno to celebrate life. And this is coming from a resident Eeyore. So if you want to have a good time, throw a party, twerk yourself into oblivion, put on 24 K Magic. You won’t be disappointed.

Album of the Week: The Veronicas

The-Veronicas-The-Veronicas-2014-International-1200x1200-300x300

The one good thing about the fall I enjoy is record companies issuing releases in time for Christmas (or whatever else you might celebrate). It’s like their last push for music ear budders like myself to get into new bands or singers that we might not have heard anything from and I dig that. That being said, this is a band that is a perfect example. I don’t know much about The Veronicas other than they’re Australian, they’re twins, and they have a single called “You Ruined Me.” When I heard this first single, I was a little hesitant because I thought, “Ok, here we go, another band writing sad sap music and singing about a love lost.” So when I was sent their latest self tilted album I already had a preconceived notion. I have to say, I couldn’t have BEEN more wrong if I tried. These ladies are, as Robbie Williams says, “the tits.” They do not disappoint. Lisa and Jessica Origliasso have made an album that captures all the best in music today – melodies, dance, pop, electronic, solid songwriting, and vocals. If this album doesn’t sell well, it’ll be a tragedy because they really really are wonderful. Stand out tracks – really, the WHOLE ALBUM. It’s a rarity that I go for every song on an album. Most albums have at least two songs of filler. But these ladies know their stuff. They know what works, and what doesn’t. They really have something for everyone. Let me give you a run down of a few tracks:

1. Sanctified – A sexy sultry boot stomping “take me to the river” jam about love and the feeling, the intense feeling you get when you’re wrapped up in it. Truly beautiful.

2. Do You Miss Me? – If you are a fan of electronic music with a hint of synths and industrial elements, then this is right up your alley. It’s dance-y, bouncy, and honestly… a rap song lol. Trust me. It’s excellent. Their raps intertwined with industrial undertones can be compared to any rapper out there today. I’m not lying. It’s good shit.

3. Cruel – Easily a radio hit. It’s reminiscent of bands like Paramore, Sleeper Agent, Echosmith, and the like. It’s very catchy. The main objective: being upset at the ex boyfriend who shows off his new flavor of the month, and virtually ignoring his ex.. And every time she sees them together, it is like a knife to the heart. She sees it as a cruel and heartless. She wants him to miss her. We’ve all been there haven’t we?

4.  Line of Fire – Another sexy tune but with a hip hop beat behind it. The vocals just ooze sex if that’s possible. They’re setting you up for the kill. They know what they want and won’t expect anything less.

5.  Teenage Millionaire – Another dance track about a love affair that they treasure as the richest thing in their lives and that relationship is so grand it makes them famous. If only all love could be like that, no?

6. Born Bob Dylan – This is truly a standout for me. The lyrics are wonderfully beautiful. She is trying to capture how she feels for someone but can’t. She tries. But can’t, so she wishes she could be as poetic as Bob Dylan. She struggles because she KNOWS how she feels in her heart, but words seem to escape her. It’s another radio friendly potential single that is an absolute winner for me.

I love this album folks. I won’t reveal all the tracks. But I thank The Veronicas for giving me faith in good pop music again. So many influences are heard in this album. If you want to hear an array of entertainment, I suggest you give them a listen.

What I’m Listening To…

I hear crickets. But that’s not all I’m listening to.

Check out my current picks. Or not. It’s not like it matters..but I find them quite entertaining.

whati'mlisteningto#1

1. JUSTICE – Access All Arenas: a live album made to watch yourself shaking your ass. If you’re lucky.

2. Miyazaki – Color of Glass: Sound landscapes with haunting melodies and weird vocal arrangements.. total headphone record.

3. Matthew Ryan – Regret Over the Wires: Scruffy voice mixed with minimal production singing about tales of love, life, and sadness.

4.Mark Kozelek & Jimmy Lavalle – Perils from the Sea: Electronic beats backing up a very sad voice. Get ready for the waterworks..although the music behind the sadness is downright beautiful.

5. Five – Five : Too many fives.. a happy accident. This boy band from the late 90s has now reunited. One of them must be broke. So I took the opportunity to relive my fangirl Brit boy band days. Pure pop goodness.

6. Carmen Villian – Sleeper: LOUD LOUD LOUD. No coffee needed here..

7. Elew-Rockjazz vol. 2: Elew brings new covers to life VIA PIANO.. Yup. Amazeballs.

8. Kavinsky – Outrun: He made his name as one of the artists from the Drive soundtrack. This album continues the same flow, moody, dark, and electronic undertones with creepy voices in the background. Perfect riding music. At night. Away from zombies!

9. Little Boots – Nocturnes: FINALLY Little Boots’ new one full of style, pizazz, and dance hands. Same as jazz hands but bouncier.

That’s a wrap. If you read this, thanks.. if not, your loss..

Pod Rotation

So, I’m giving you an insight as to what is “pod spinnin’ ” right now. It’s a little old with new. But my ears can’t get enough. I love it when that happens. I swear I wish Apple would make a much bigger ipod for us music freaks who can’t get enough. It would be so much easier. Deleting bands is like getting rid of your children. Your heart breaks. You feel shame. You hope no one finds out that you deleted that last Kylie album – Not that I’d EVER delete Kylie. Her name is the first that came up into my brain. It never ends does it? The brain of a music-holic is never ever shut down, even for a minute.

It could be worse.

1. Dirty Vegas – Electric Love. Epic. The End.

2. Kraak and Smaak – Electric Hustle. Funny these bands both title their albums “Electric”..

3. A Tribe Called Quest – The Low End Theory. One of the best rap albums. Ever. Over.

4. Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part 2

5. Cold Cave – Cherish the Light Years

6. Hauschka – Salon Des Amateurs….Electronic orchestra. That’s all I have to say..

7. Alicia Keys – Elements of Freedom

8. X Ray Spex – RIP Poly.. – The Anthology

9. The Kills – Blood Pressures

10. Grace Jones – Night Clubbing

11. Squarepusher – Hard Normal Daddy

12. Fort Minor – The Rising Tied

13. Lisa Bianco – Post Data

14. The Decemberists – The King is Dead

15. DJ Spooky – Dub at it’s best…

16. Augustana – Augustana. So. So. Good.

I’m gonna stop right there before I type forever and a day. I hope you free your mind and listen to a few of these.. They’re Gabby approved.

The end.
